Week of January 24th!

I don't even know what to say about all this crazy, snowy weather!  I hope your weekend was a nice one!

Spelling-  (long e) sheep  tree  she  three  we  beach  dream  treat  seat  leaf
Test on Friday!

Math- Our addition test from last week is rescheduled for Tuesday.  The students have learned many ways to help them add.  We use number lines, 10 frames, counters, pattern charts. These manipulatives are always available for the students to use especially during a test. Word problems are ongoing and will be on the test as well.

Religion- Our Religion test on the Church Year will be on Monday.  I will re-review (is that even a word??)
before the test.
We will be making our first Prayer Blanket this week. We have been discussing during these winter weeks  how the less fortunate have things so much harder than we do and how blessed we are in so many ways.  It amazes may how many students really "get" this.  We will make a blanket to donate to the homeless shelter at the Newburgh Ministry .

Science-  We will be doing our snow melting experiment as well as making snowflakes and snow globes.  The children have had an opportunity to hear some great Read-Alouds (fiction & non-fiction) about the weather.

Reading-  I decided over Christmas break, after much thought, to make another reading group.  We now have 3 groups instead of 2.  This will allow me to move more quickly with some and give that extra time to others.
I am working on having the First grade class read to the Kindergarten class during Catholic Schools Week.

ENJOY THE WEEK!!

Week of January 17th!

As I write this blog we are working on a 4 day weekend!  Hope yours was relaxing.

We did several activities associated with Martin Luther King and his contributions.  The children worked on a packet and wrote their own dream for the world.  Very touching.  They will be coming home this week.

Religion- We will be continuing our unit on the Church Year and will have a test on Friday.

Reading- The UNDER THE SEA projects came out wonderful!  The children will be sharing them with the class tomorrow.  Thank you for your help!       Please read with your child each night!

Science- We are continuing our unit on weather...this week we will be focusing on frozen precipitation...how appropriate in light of all the snow.

Social Studies- We will be discussing the village of Walden and its history and changes.  If anyone has pictures or stories to share let me know.  Our family trees are hanging in the hall.  Come take a look!  The class did a great job putting them together.  It was hard work.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

We will have a test on Friday!

We are working very hard on our addition facts.  The students are learning to use different strategies to finding sums... 10 frame, counters and number lines are just a few.

Our Under the Sea  information is due in class today to go along with our Reading story How Many Fish?
We will be re-writing and illustrating during the week and sharing with the class on Friday!

We will continue with our unit on Weather.  Snow seems to be the dominant weather force recently!  We read Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and wrote about our own towns with crazy weather.

We will be talking about the Church Year in Religion as we wrap up our study of  The Good Samaritan and the Great Commandment.  We have many Good Samaritans in our class.  They are a very compassionate class and I am proud of how they treat others.

We will finish our Family Trees this week as well.  We had several students out sick last week so we have a few more trees to put together.

Have a wonderful week and thank you for sharing your children with me each day.  They are a joy!

The class worked so very hard on their Nativity Books.  The final step is the cover which will be done on Wednesday. They are beautiful!  We will be decorating our crowns for the Epiphany on January 6th!  We will also be talking about the Good Samaritan story this week.

Our Jesse Tree was a great way to introduce the Family Tree.  We will begin to put our own family trees  together on Tuesday.

Be on the lookout for an Under the Sea project that will be coming home at the end of the week.  It will go along with our Reading story...How Many Fish?

We will begin a unit on Weather this week ...How about that blizzard last Sunday?
I have a sign that hangs outside my house that says: Please Snow..I'm a Teacher!

I cannot tell you how proud I am of the way your children read to their classmates.  We chose books that were appropriate for their reading level and they practiced at school and at home.  I was so impressed with how they read and how they handled themselves. Certificates and pictures will be coming home on Monday!

The 1st and 2nd Grade did a great job speaking and singing at the Christmas Prayer Service on 12/23. Ask them to do Merry Christmas in sign language.

May God Bless all of you in 2011!
