Week of June 13th-17th!

I hope you had a nice weekend! 


It's hard to believe that we are two weeks away from the end of this school year.  It has been an honor for me to teach your children and share this wonderful school year with them.  I know I speak for Mrs. Abate as well when I say they are a magnificent group of kids.  They are smart, kind and so very funny.  Their unique personalities made for a quite an enjoyable experience for all of us.  We will miss them next year...but thank goodness they will be right across the hall with the wonderful Mrs. Downes.  I know I am leaving them in excellent hands.

Spelling- we will be reviewing some of the words that gave us trouble during the year.
There is no test on Friday but we will have a class Spelling Bee! 

Reading- We will be finishing up Me on the Map and Watermelon Day.
We will have our final Reading test on Wednesday.
I am sure your child has told you about all the Junie B. Jones  books we have read this year.  They love those books.  They memorized the first paragraph which is the same in all the books...ask them to say it for you!!!!   We will begin our final book which is Junie B.Jones.. Graduation Day.   The class is very excited.

Religion- Thank you to our wonderful 2nd Graders for coming to our room and answering questions about First Holy Communion.  What a treat for 1st Grade. 
We will finish up our chapter on Mass and the Eucharist with a test on Wednesday.


We will be working on our Father's/Grandfather's Day gifts this week as well.

REMEMBER....... OUR POETRY READING WILL BE ON THURSDAY, JUNE 23rd  AT 9:00
AM IN THE GYM!!  WE HAVE BEEN WORKING VERY HARD TO MEMORIZE AND RECITE OUR POEMS!  I HOPE ALL OF YOU CAN JOIN US!

Week of June 6th - June 10th!

I hope you all had a nice weekend!  The weather was delightful for sure!

The students came home from school on Friday with all their purchases from our 1st Grade Store.
They definitely have a good foundation in the value and counting on of money.  We will continue to review this.

This week in Math we will begin telling time to the hour and half hour.  We will be using hands on clocks to help us with this.

Spelling- vacation  seashore  mountains  swimming  ice cream  ocean  family  friends  sunscreen  summer
Test on Friday! (can you tell I'm excited about summer????)
 There will be no NEW Spelling words next week.  We will use this week to review words and practice words that have not been spelled correctly.

A note came home about our poetry recital on Thursday, June 23rd!  We will begin to work on all the special things to be included in that day.  All family members and friends are invited.  The Poetry Readings will begin at 9:00 am in the gym.

Fr. Fallon visited our class after Mass on Friday to talk  about the sacrament of Reconciliation and Penance.
This week we will talk about Mass and the Eucharist.  We will invite the 2nd graders to our room so they can describe their experience making First Holy Communion.

The students brought home their bean plants on Friday.  That went along with our reading of From Seed to Plant.  I am very pleased at the progress that all the students are making in Reading.  Please continue to read with your children at home.

Week of May 31st

I hope your Memorial Day Weekend was an enjoyable one!  God Bless all our fallen soldiers and their families.

Our class trip last week was a lot of fun!  The Trevor Zoo was great and the students enjoyed the day!

Spelling- stopped  pulled  spoke  flew  dropped  bought  called  laughed  shopped  heard
Test on Friday!

Math- we are finishing up our unit on money this week...The First Grade Store will be open for business on Friday, June 3rd.  Students in the class will be able to purchase small items and will have to count out money to do this!  It is a great learning tool as well as tons of  fun for them!

Religion-  We will finish our chapter on Forgiveness and Reconciliation and our test will be on Friday.
We will be talking about Ascension Thursday.

Please mark your calendars...June 23rd is the First Grade Poetry Recital!  All families are invited to watch the students perform their poems!  What a treat for all!

We are off for the Holy Day on Thursday and Friday is a half day!

May 23rd- May 27th

Happy Monday!  I hope your weekend was a nice one. 

We will visit the book fair on Monday and the students can purchase or just look around.  The book fair will be up and running until Thursday!

Our class trip is Tuesday and we will be leaving the school at 9:00 am.  We are going to the Trevor Zoo in Millbrook, NY and then the Millbrook Tribute Park.  Your child will need a bag lunch including a drink. Snacks will be provided at the park! Sneakers and comfortable clothes are suggested.  We will return to MPB by 2:30 so students can take the bus home!

Test on Friday!

We will continue with our unit on money in Math!  We have been using our "play money" (it looks so real) to learn the value of each coin and add coin values together.  We will finish the unit next Friday (June 3rd) with the FIRST GRADE STORE!  Ask your child about it!

Today we will be dancing the Macarena to close out our Reading story, Rex and Lilly...Let's Dance
One of our groups is reading about Johnny Appleseed!
Please continue to read each day with your child.

We will be planting beans this week to coincide with the story From Seed to Plant .
We will be making Root Beer Floats on Friday to identify the 3 types of matter!  Science can be so delicious!

We will be talking about the story of the Prodigal Son in Religion. Last week we talked about peacemakers and how Jesus was always a Peacemaker.  They wrote about someone they knew who was a peacemaker.  They did a beautiful job and their work will be hanging in the hall.

Check out the Caterpillar Life Cycle projects  and butterflies hanging in the hall.

May 16th-May 20th!

I hope your weekend was enjoyable.  I was able to see our 2nd graders receive First Holy Communion.  What a beautiful experience for them.

Spelling- July  August  September  October  November  December
Test Friday!

Math-  We will begin our unit on money this week!  We will be using coins as manipulatives as the students learn the values of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quartersTest Friday!
Our lemonade/brownies sale brought in over $90.00 for the American Red Cross.  That $ will be sent out this week.  Thank you for all your help!  I was so proud of how hard the class worked and how excited they were to do this project!

Reading-  Our puppet shows last week were a great success(and alot of fun). The students made their own puppets and performed Digger Pig and the Turnip and The Little Red Hen for the Kindergarten and 2nd Grade.  I am very pleased with how the class is progressing in their reading.  Please continue to read with them at home.

Religion- Thanks to Fr. Fallon for visiting our class on Friday to talk about Baptism.  He brought some visuals for the kids to see and touch. (candle, prayer book...)  We will continue on with Chapter 18 this week.

Science-  We will continue with our unit on the Life Cycle of the Butterfly!  Ask your child about the butterfly they researched and wrote about!

Social Studies-  We will finally make our Ojo de Dios to continue our unit on Mexican Culture.

Week of May 9th - 13th!

Happy Mother's Day to all our wonderful moms!  I hope you had a great day with your family. I spent the day with my mom and my 96 year old grandmother! (as well as my 97 year old grandfather)


Spelling-  January  February  March  April  May  June
Test on Friday.

Reading- 2 of our Reading groups will be putting on skits in the classroom on Friday.  One group will be performing Digger Pig and the Turnip and the other The Little Red Hen.

Our Lemonade and Brownie Sale will be held on Tuesday, May 10th.  We will be set up outside the cafeteria before both lunch periods.  Some students will be serving, some will be handling the money and others will be graphing our sales. Thanks to all who are baking brownies.  All proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross in its efforts to help the victims of the recent tornados in the south.

Math- 2 digit subtraction (no borrowing) will be our focus this week...including word problems.
Test on Friday.


The class had a great time celebrating Cinco de Mayo last Thursday.  Thanks to Mrs. Reinhart for the yummy chips and salsa!!!!  Mrs. Abate read Spanish poems to the class and the pinata was a huge hit!!!

This week we will be making an Ojo de Dio (eye of God) .  Ask you child about this Mexican tradition.

Fr. Fallon will be visiting our class as he does each week to talk about the sacrament of Baptism.
Test on Chapter 17 on Thursday!

We will continue our unit on the life cycle of the butterfly with some educational and fun activities!

Week of May 2nd- 6th!

I hope you had a wonderful Easter break.  I was able to get together with friends and family and still relax a bit.
It was great to meet with all of you to discuss your your child's report cards. 

Spelling-  Monday  Tuesday  Wednesday  Thursday  Friday  Saturday  Sunday
There will be a test on Friday!

Math- we will spend this week learning to add 2 digit numbers without regrouping.  Next week we will begin subtracting 2 digit numbers.  Test on Thursday.
We will follow that with units on time and money.

Reading- One of our reading groups will be reading a story called Lemonade for Sale.   I will discuss with Mrs. O'Connor the possibility of having a class lemonade sale to benefit the tornado victims in the south.

Religion-  We will begin discussing the seven sacraments. (Chapter 16)
Test on Thursday!

We will celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Thursday. That will fit in nicely with our Middle States unit on Mexican Culture.

We will be planting flowers and discussing the plant life cycle as we spring into warmer weather.
